Understanding Engagement Metrics
Detailed explanation of engagement metrics, what they mean, and how they're calculated.
Overview
Engagement metrics help you understand how your audience interacts with your content. These metrics provide insights into what resonates with your followers and help you create more effective content strategies.
Types of Engagement
Engagement metrics include various types of interactions:
Likes
The number of users who liked your post. This is a basic form of engagement indicating that users enjoyed your content.
Saves
The number of users who saved your post (e.g., saved pins on Pinterest). Saves indicate strong interest and intent to return to the content.
Clicks
The number of users who clicked on links in your post. Clicks measure how effective your content is at driving traffic.
Comments
The number of comments on your post. Comments indicate deeper engagement and conversation around your content.
Total Engagement
Total Engagement is calculated by summing all engagement actions across all your posts:
Total Engagement = Likes + Saves + Clicks + Comments
This metric gives you an overall view of how much your audience is interacting with your content. Higher total engagement generally indicates more effective content and a more engaged audience.
Engagement Rate
Engagement Rate is a percentage that shows how engaged your audience is relative to your reach:
Engagement Rate = (Total Engagement / Total Reach) × 100
This metric helps you understand:
- How effective your content is at engaging your audience
- Whether your content resonates with your followers
- The quality of your audience engagement
Tip: A higher engagement rate (even with lower reach) often indicates more valuable, targeted content than high reach with low engagement.
Impressions vs. Engagement
It's important to understand the difference between impressions and engagement:
Impressions
The total number of times your content was displayed to users. This includes views in feeds, search results, and other places where your content appears. Impressions measure visibility, not interaction.
Engagement
The total number of actions users took on your content (likes, saves, clicks, comments). Engagement measures actual interaction and interest in your content.
High impressions with low engagement might indicate your content is being shown but not resonating. High engagement relative to impressions suggests your content is effective at capturing attention.
How Metrics Are Collected
Engagement metrics are collected from your connected social media platforms:
- Publishing: When you publish a post, PostLoudly tracks which platforms it was published to
- Syncing: When you sync your accounts, PostLoudly fetches the latest engagement data from each platform's API
- Aggregation: Metrics from all platforms are combined to show total engagement across your accounts
- Updates: Metrics are updated each time you sync your accounts
Important: Metrics are only available for published posts. Draft and scheduled posts don't have engagement data until they're published. Also, some platforms may have delays in reporting metrics, so sync regularly to get the latest data.
Platform-Specific Metrics
Different platforms provide different types of engagement data:
